I had always wanted to go to a murder mystery party but have never been presented with the chance. On my 26th birthday I decided that if I ever wanted to attend a murder mystery party, I would have to make it happen. I had tremendous fun searching for the party I wanted to host from among the hundreds, even thousands, of the party packs that are available. You can buy party packs from toy shops or game shops. You can also find them on the internet second hand and often times in charity shops. You can purchase them on eBay and there are many e-commerce stores dedicated solely to murder mystery games. You simply select whatever is of interest to you. You can choose games for four to forty players, although I recommend keeping it smallish (8-12 people works great). You need to invite a suitable group of people that are willing to dress up and get into character. I am fortunate enough to have an exciting bunch of friends and family that really get into the game.
Once you have the game selected and a bunch of people in mind to attend it is time to get creative. First you need to check that everyone is free and reserve the party date. Then you need to allocate each member of the party a character and post out a small information pack to them. The game instructions will tell you exactly what you need to do and in what order. What you send out or give to each person will just be an invitation and a character description which tells them their character’s background and offers costume suggestions. I remember my guests got so excited when they received the invitation to my first party. Most people have never been to a party like that before and are keen to try something different.
The next part involves planning; you have plenty of planning to do. I love organising and cooking, so hosting parties is a lot of fun for me and I make every effort to host grand events. My first party was a Titanic theme and I served a twelve course meal! I actually researched details about the Titantic and came across a menu, so I simply based my own menu around that. I also looked into the etiquette from that time period and made a list of rules for each « passenger. » I also found some music from that era and played it in the background. What makes the experience much more fun and authentic is paying attention to the small details. I asked the guests to bring either red wine, champagne, white wine or port so that it cut the cost down for me. My second party was an Alice in Wonderland party and I decided for it to not be a set meal, but rather a selection of cakes, cookies, sandwiches, tarts, fairy bread and pies. Everything was made from scratch and it took some time; however, you don’t need to go to that extreme if you don’t want to. You can ask your guests to bring a plate of something if you like. Just use whatever system works best for you. Renting a costume can be costly so if money is an issue for you (or your guests) then use clothes that you already have, shop at a charity store or borrow a costume from someone that you know.
The game instructions are thorough and will teach you how to make the dialogue booklets for each character. There is also evidence and also clues for the party and for the solution; the solution should be put in a sealed envelope and hidden away out of sight. All you need to do is follow the party pack instructions and enjoy yourself at the event. You do want to be certain that the game you have chosen is age appropriate. If kids or teenagers are coming then you might need to choose a younger game. For my parties, I chose games for adult age members and they were a lot of fun but also scandalous!
Murder mystery parties are fun for several reasons. It is a lot of fun to dress up in a character costume. If you are stuck in a rut it is exciting to play the role of someone else and leave it behind. It is nice to be surrounded by fun people. It is nice to eat good food and drink good wine. It is fun to put your brain to work to analyze the clues and solve the murder mystery. Your guests will leave the party ranting about what a great time they had, and you will experience great satisfaction in knowing you gave them the opportunity to attend such an enjoyable party!
